Follow our tips and advice for quick and easy ways to save energy, lower your bills and reduce your carbon footprint at home:

1. Use your outdoor space, whether it’s a balcony or garden, and dry your laundry outside. Or use a clothes airer inside your home in a ventilated room. Tumble dryers are energy hungry, adding up to £60+ a year to your bills.
2. Keep the curtains open for as long as you can and make the most of the natural light – saves using the ‘big light’.
3. Shorten your shower from 8 minutes or more to just 4 minutes. This will save you at least £60 each year.
4. Some energy suppliers offer cheaper tariffs if you run your appliances during off peak times. Which means popping the washing machine on after 8.00pm or at certain times on the weekend can make it much cheaper.
5. Consider buying frozen fruit and vegetables so it will last you longer and won’t go to waste.

You can make some simple changes at home to make a difference to climate change:

1. Give the fridge some love so it’s more energy efficient – the better your fridge runs, the less electricity it will use. Typically, fridges and freezers account for around 12% of the average household’s energy bill. So, try to clean and defrost yours and keep ice under control.
2. Use your water wisely – there’s a lot of energy used to purify and distribute water to our homes – so saving water can lower greenhouse gas emissions. You can do things like only filling your kettle with what you need, don’t keeping water running when brushing your teeth and make sure your washing machine is full – this means you can use them less, saving you water and money.
3. Turn off TVs, DVD players, chargers, speakers and computers when you’re not using them. Leaving appliances on standby may seem harmless – but it’s surprising how much energy they guzzle so you could save around £55 a year just by turning appliances off.
4. When its possible, open windows and internal doors so natural ventilation can flow and you prevent condensation.
5. Make the most of your Smart meter to find out what home appliances cost to run.
